Writing Tips From One Newbie To Another

Does anybody else read through their posts and have no memory of writing some of them? I have been leafing through my blog today to experience it from a visitor’s perspective. Reaching the milestone of a thousand followers has unleashed ‘the fear’!

I found this post from August 2015 and thought it was worth reposting. It’s one of my most popular posts and I still stand by everything I wrote here.

I hope you can take something from it, if not, why not share it with any new writers you might know?

1,000 Friends! I’m so excited!

I woke up this morning to a delightful notification from WordPress, I now have a thousand new friends! I like to think of you as friends not followers, that always feels a little crass to me.

I’d like to thank each one of you for coming on my learning journey with me. I’m having a ball!
Soppy post over. As you were.

Stellar Guest Post – Kevin Morris

Today’s Stellar Guest Post features London based poet, Kevin Morris. I am often left in awe of authors and poets purely as a result of the beautiful work they produce. Throw into the mix an element of adversity and I am astonished all over again.

Here, Kevin has kindly reproduced a poem for us which is from his poetry collection, ‘Lost in The Labyrinth of My Mind’. Continue reading

And the winner of this week’s Six Word Story Challenge is…

six word story, 6 word story, writing prompt

Friday can only mean one thing, it’s time to bring this week’s Six Word Story Challenge to a close.

This week I left you the prompt of TEMPTATION to wrap your storytelling noodles around. This was in homage to my ongoing struggle to ignore the bag of Easter Eggs singing to me from the top of my wardrobe. You’ll be disappointed to know that I gave in, so far two of them haven’t survived.  Continue reading

An Irritating Short Story – Revisited.

You may recall a post I wrote earlier in the month called An Irritating Story That I need Help WithIt was a post I wrote in frustration at having written a short story that just wasn’t sitting right on the page. The more I read and tinkered with it, the worse it got. I knew I was telling not showing and my minimal level of tolerance on that day would not let me see how to fix it.

Luckily, I reached out to you wonderful writerly people who made many helpful suggestions about changing the POV or adding characters. All of which made me rethink the story and iron out the things that were bothering me. Continue reading

What is a Poem? Thoughts on World Poetry Day from The Mind of Davy D

Frequent readers of my ramblings will be aware that I struggle with poetry. I don’t recall ever having learnt how to craft a good poem, which is a shame because I do so love a verse that reaches out to me.

In this post, Davy D asks the question ‘What is poetry?’ Can it be defined? How would you describe poetry to someone who had never come across this form of expression before?

Happy St Patrick’s Day Storytellers,

I hope you’ve had a good week? It’s been quite relaxed at Storyteller HQ this week, lots of reading rather than writing as I’ve hurt my back. I’m quite getting used to people doing all the jobs around here, I might string it out for a while (Don’t tell Mr Auckland though!)

Bookspine Poetry – Sci-fi

I popped into the library yesterday to indulge in a little bookspine poetry. Although I was in a library my book choice was limited to the shelves at eye level since I’m currently unable to bend! (It’s a long story involving a skiing fall, lifting a box and an osteopath)

Anyway, here’s my bookspine poetry of top shelf Sci-fi!

Men of the Otherworld,

Daughters of an Emerald dusk,

Return to the Whorl;

Frostbitten.
